Is having stretch marks around the areola a problem when getting breast implants?

No, stretch marks won't interfere with your breast surgery and in fact, are very common.   As for  the size you choose- keep in mind that stretch marks are small tears in your skin resulting from weight change and from the changes women experience in increased breast size with pregnancy.  So, it makes sense that a very large implant may accentuate those tears and/or contribute further to them.Best to make a consultation, try on sizers and get an idea of what size interests you and then learn about the impact the implants may have on your skin.  And, consider the Ideal Implant is an implant option!Good luck!In good health,Ellen Mahony, MD

Not at all;  you should be able to proceed without a problem.   Many women who present for breast augmentation, especially after childbirth and/or weight gain/loss have stretch marks on their breast skin.My best advice: select your plastic surgeon carefully. Make sure that he/she has significant experience achieving the types of outcomes you will be pleased with. Then, communicate your goals carefully, as well. Working together you will come up with a good plan to achieve your goals.

Patients should understand that an augmentation presents a larger canvas for the qualities you love (or don't) about your breasts. Asymmetries can be magnified. Positional changes will seem exaggerated. A prominent vein or skin change may become more noticeable.Stretch marks (or dermal tears) present no technical impediment to surgery. However, placing a stretch mark on stretch tends to magnify them.
