Walking and moving around is an important part of the recovery process because it can help reduce swelling and enhances circulation. At my practice, I recommend that patients start by taking a few very short walks as early as the day of the procedure. Walking 5 kilometers (about 3 miles) at 9 days post-op may be a bit ambitious for some patients but is okay if you feel good. Listen to your body and call your surgeon if you have any concerns.
The best way to evaluate if you’ve overdone things with your activities is how you feel. Most people would not be walking 5 km this soon after surgery, however if you exercised regularly before surgery a 5 km walk will feel good, especially with our lovely Toronto spring weather!Pay attention to how you feel during and after activities. If you develop discomfort or pain at the surgical site you should reduce your activities. Be sure to have a good rest every day and drink enough water. As a rule, I recommend you do not return to vigorous exercise that will increase your heart rate for three weeks after surgery. Doing so many cause bleeding or impair the incisions and deeper tissues from healing.Best of luck to you as you continue to heal.Dr. Nancy de Kleer
Thank you for the question. Your plastic surgeon will be the best source of information/guidance regarding postoperative activity after your breast surgery. Much of what he/she recommends will depend on how you are progressing (and whether you have experienced any complications). Given that he/she is ultimately responsible for your care, avoiding potentially confusing advice from online consultants is in your best interests.Generally speaking, it will be important for you to return to activities in a very gradual/cautious fashion. "Listen to your body" as you do so. Best wishes for an outcome that you will be very pleased with.
Its always best to ease back into your regular exercise routine. I advise my patients that they can resume regular activity six weeks after surgery. Always best to listen to your body - if you feel any pain or discomfort you should ease off your walking.

Its not unusual to experience small areas of wound breakdown after breast reduction surgery. Typically they heal well without any intervention. I advise all my patients to refrain from smoking during the post operative period as it can delay wound healing.
Even though no plastic surgeon should ever guarantee that you'll maintain nipple sensitivity following breast reduction surgery, the fact is that it's a fairly rare complication. As you can see from RealSelf's "worth it" ratings, more than 95% of breast reduction patients are happy with their...
