Dear notworth, Fractional laser resurfacing either fractional infrared or Fraxel CO2, fractional radio frequency energy and other resurfacing techniques can lead to a tremendous amount of swelling. The swelling and redness can leave a very round looking appearance to the face and generally this can last between one and two weeks. To have persistent swelling for 12 weeks would be very unusual. If you have sensitive skin and a clinical condition such as rosacea prolonged swelling and edema can occur, however, 8 weeks of swelling would be atypical. At this point in time the best advise would be to meet with your operative physician who performed the fractional resurfacing to see if there’s any underlying causes or conditions that may be treated that may have been stimulated by the fractional resurfacing procedure. I hope this information has been of some assistance and best of luck. R. Stephen Mulholland, M.D. Certified Plastic Surgeon Yorkville, Toronto
