Hi all, Should I take a second cycle?

Question

I’ve been on accutane for 6 months. I took 20mg for 2 months and then 40mg for 4 months to finish the course. After a week of being off of accutane, my acne is coming back. When I approached my doctor about accutane the first time he had no idea how it worked whatsoever to the point where I was guiding him through the whole course and explaining to him how it works. I want to go on a second cycle and I really want someone to guide me through it. What should I tell my doctor?

Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers.

Hello and thank you for your question. A "completed" Accutane course would depend on your weight and target total dose, not necessarily the duration of being on the medication. Depending on the severity of your acne, you may be again a candidate for taking Accutane. I would recommend a consultation by a board certified dermatologist for evaluation of your skin and discussion of appropriate treatment. Best of luck.
