If you are allergic to one type of hyaluronic acid filler, does that mean you are allergic to all types?

I had a stage 4 hypersensitivity reaction to Redensity II and have had it dissolved. Does that mean I am allergic to all types of hyaluronic fillers? Would you recommend trying a different one? Or staying away from fillers indefinitely?

Allergic reactions to hyaluronic acid do not occur. However, you might have reacted to another ingredient in the filler, such as lidocaine. I would consider trying a different filler brand and would suspect you would have a better result. Make sure you work with a very experienced, board-certified facial plastic surgeon to ensure your treatment is both safe and successful.

It would be very rare to have a true allergy to hyaluronic acid fillers especially when they’re used by a board-certified dermatologist who uses and and health Canada approved fillers

There are many counterfeit products on the market unfortunately. I suspect that it’s most likely that you had some kind of contamination or potentially expired or counterfeit product? Especially if this was not done by a physician who is board certified in one of the core specialties like dermatology or plastic surgery.

There is so little regulation in this field and we see too many unqualified people doing these procedures

I would recommend that you see an allergist and potentially get tested just to be sure

Thank you for your great question. It is possible to have reactions that can resemble allergic reactions, but can be infectious or inflammatory in nature instead. In our practice with situations like these, we will cleanse a small area in the forearm, inject a small amount of a different dermal filler, and observe for any reaction. If no reaction, we proceed with injections. Our offices have the necessary protocols, medication, and supplies present in the event of allergic reaction.

To make this simple, you cannot be allergic to a hyaluronic acid filler. You may be allergic to what products are added to the filler itself or the process how it is made. Some of the most basic fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane should NOT elicit an allergic reaction. I hope this helps and good luck from New York City plastic surgery

Hello and thank you for your question. A type 4 hypersensitivity does not mean you are allergic to all HA fillers - however it can occur with any filler range. My advice would be to try another brand of filler as some people respond better to other brands if one doesn't suit, best wishes
