Accutane and itching: I’ve taken 10 days of Accutane 40mg and my skin is so itchy it keeps me up at night.

Question

Not just my face, but my body too. I make sure to moisturize all the time as well. Is this normal and is there anything i can do to help it? The last 3 nights i’ve had horrible sleeps because i constantly wake up itchy.

Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers.

Thank you for your question. A common side effect of Accutane is dry mucous membranes and skin. Severe dry skin can cause itching, and often times, side effects are based on the dose of Accutane. Also, in my experience, the first month tends to be the worst with side effects because the body is slowly getting acclimated to the medication. Moisturizing creams are better than lotions, however, if the itching is constant and uncontrollable with creams, then I highly recommend you consult with your prescribing physician regarding the side effects and for treatment options. Take care and good luck.
