1 week post op of gastric balloon; Is it safe to lose this much weight this fast?

I got the gastric balloon placed 1 week ago and have lost 22lbs in this last week. My starting weight was 242lbs I'm 5'9 and am now down to 220lbs. Is it safe to loose this much weight this fast?

it is hard to tell without actually seeing and examining a patient. Most of my patients come in for follow 6 days post procedure. Rapid weightloss is possible and it is not necessarily dangerous. However I suggest you schedule a post op visit with your physician.

Most patients will lose close to 10lbs in the first week, because of initial fluid losses and because we ask them to follow a liquid diet for a full 7 days, while adjusting to the balloon. Losing 22lbs in a week would indicate to me that you are potentially very dehydrated. It's very important to stay in close contact with your physician during the first 1-2 weeks to avoid dehydration. After the first 1-2 weeks, we anticipate a more modest but steady weight loss of 1-3 lbs per week.
