Is it possible to tear a ligament or muscle when smart lipo is done on a hip?

The Smartlipo procedure should not bring you the
pain of a muscle tear. Although, you may have done something post procedure and
injured yourself. Follow up with your surgeon and be sure you are healing
properly.

The most common reason for a bulge after liposuction is a seroma, a collection of fluid. This usually develops in the first few weeks after surgery. It is best treated by removing the fluid inside with a needle. Since the liposuction canulas are blunt, they are less likely to tear important structures like muscle. However, injuries may occur if a lot of force was used. A MRI could define what the bulge is.  It could also be a collection of blood, a hematoma, which should slowly resolve over time. If need be, you might want to get another opionion, but I would suggest asking your surgeon first. Good luck to you.
