The problem occurs when you don't have missing teeth replaced for extended periods of time.  The teeth continue to erupt until they come to the lower gum.It is difficult but orthodontists can sometimes push the teeth back up where they belong. No, the oral surgeon was more than likely correct. When the teeth supra-erupt (extrude down or
up), they usually carry the bone with them.
So not only are the teeth longer, but so is the bone. Not only do you have to shorten the teeth to
make space, but you also have to reduce the bone. Furthermore, depending on where the location
of the furcation exists, this is where the roots begin to divide, there is the
issue of whether bone reduction may create a periodontal problem. Then there is the issue of shortening the
teeth, reducing the tooth structure enough to make space may require a root
canal. Intrusion of the molars (pushing them up) via orthodontics is extremely
difficult, but an orthodontist can best answer that question (I am a general and
cosmetic dentist); so schedule an appointment to see one soon. You have a very
complex problem, and to prevent the problem from occurring, I highly recommend
replacing missing teeth as soon as possible. Tooth migration does not occur
with everyone after extractions, but when it does, it costs more in the long
run.
