Liposuction recovery - is one week off work enough time?

Hi, I am scheduled to have a Lipo in couple weeks. I work as a law-enforcement officer, so my job is pretty physical. On top of this, I also wear a duty belt that weighs around 15 pounds. My concern is that I only took one week off work for recovery. Do you think this is enough time?

One week is often enough for light desk work after liposuction, but it may be too short for full law-enforcement duty. A physical job, sudden movement, running, restraint work, lifting, and a 15-pound duty belt can increase discomfort, swelling, bruising, and risk of irritating the treated areas early in recovery.

The right timing depends on how many areas are treated, how extensive the liposuction is, and how you heal. Many patients need closer to 2-3 weeks before heavier activity, and sometimes longer before full unrestricted duty. I would ask your surgeon for a written return-to-work plan that separates light duty from full duty, and see if modified duty without the heavy belt is possible at first. If you have increasing pain, marked swelling, shortness of breath, chest pain, calf pain, or one-sided leg swelling, you should seek urgent medical evaluation.

One month post-procedure is when we typically recommend a patient can resume light exercise. If your job is physically demanding, it would be recommended that you take more than one week off and participate in crucial aftercare protocols such as hyperbaric therapy, IV therapy, lymphatic massages, etc following your procedure to ensure the best possible results. Strenuous activity should be avoided.

Taking only one week might put you in a challenging position on the eighth day post-surgery, where you could potentially experience postoperative pain or restrictions from your garment. Based on your job duties I will recommend to extend your recovery time for at least 3- 4 weeks, please keep in mind after liposuction your body deal with a lot inflammation and discomfort, if you add to that your work schedule your body will heal slow, after any procedure is very important to have enough time to fully recover before start your daily activities again.

Patients working non physically demanding jobs can often return to work in a week, but your situation is different. If you are having multiple areas suctioned or specifically your abdomen you may need to take more time off, or at least have modified duties.  You will still be quite swollen after a week and will likely be in compression for several weeks.  I encourage you to speak to your surgeon as she/he is most familiar with your surgical plan.

You may not be back to full recovery until 4 weeks, but do not have any restrictions on lifting. If you are having abdominal liposuction, watch how your belt fits and try not to leave an imprint of it. Foam padding under your compression garment may be helpful. People vary quite a bit in regards to when they feel recovered from surgery to the point of tolerating going back to work. Most patients can handle low impact daily activities 5 to 7 days after the procedure but high impact activities, including wearing heavy equipment is quite different. Some people may require 2 to 3 weeks or longer to be comfortable with activities like running. 
A lot depends on how aggressive the procedure is as well.
