Hi. I'm having a BBL in a week, and the birth control I'm currently on has a high procent of proved blood clots. I've been using it for 8 years +, and never had a problem with them. But would it be smart to stop taking them before my BBL? Since there's always high risks of blood clots during surgery. The name on the pills is Yasmin.

Answer: Birth control pills and BBL surgery I generally do not have patience stop taking birth control pills unless they have other increased risk factors. Patches and vaginal rings have a higher incidence of blood clots and birth control pills. I am somewhat different and that I do these procedures with my patients awake using local anesthesia with mild sedation. The great majority of plastic surgeons rely on General Anastasia for these procedures. General anesthetics are believed to be a big culprit in developing blood clots after certain surgical procedures. Each surgeon will differ on their opinion on this. I see nothing wrong with stopping the birth control pills one month prior to the procedure then restarting them with taking appropriate contraception in the interim. Best, Mats Hagstrom M.D.
