How soon after a breast reduction will I be able to sleep on my side?

Question

I usually get cramped up when trying to sleep on my back for more than a short time. It really hurts my neck and makes me restless. I have been a side sleeper for most of my life. I have heard that after a breast reduction that you really can't rest on your sides because of the swelling. I was wondering how many days this will go on. I think I might end up really tired.

Thank you for your question.  I tell my patients that that it is fine if they sleep on their side for the first couple weeks, as long as they do not roll over onto their bellies. In my own practice you would be permitted to sleep on your side as soon as you wish. However this is a question that should be addressed to your own plastic surgeon.

I think that it is inevitable that most people turn in their sleep. I do not want patients to lie on their chests but sleeping on the side if comfortable is usually ok a short time after surgery in my practice. Best to ask your surgeon.

After a breast reduction, a patient can sleep on their side safely at three weeks postoperatively. Additionally, soft support underneath the breast should include a pillow or a similar soft cushion.  Most importantly, you should receive permission by your surgeon after performing a physical examination of the surgical sites to ensure there are no complications. Best wishes.
