Can Dermaroller reduce white sunspots?

Question

I just received a Dermaroller as a gift, and haven't used it yet. But wanted to find out if it will help to reduce white sunspots on my face or would it make it worse. I have read that it can cause hyper pigmentation so wouldn't like to make the situation worse by using it on those areas.

Thank you for your question in regards to the derma roller.  A derma roller could help reduce the appearance of white sunspots if the appropriate products are used in conjunction with the treatments. Kojic acid is a wonderful product that helps to even skin color, and sometimes Hydroquinone is very helpful. As always, sunscreen should be used daily. I would advise that you see your skin care specialist before using a derma roller if your skin is prone to hyperpigmentation. Generally it is helpful for that, but you would want to make sure you are using the correct skin care products alongside the derma roller.To find out what is best for you, see two or more board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have treatment. It really depends on the diagnosis. If you white sunspots are NOT vitiligo, but areas of hypo pigmentation, then certainly skin needling- rolling combined with topics such as Latiesse can help. If the mottled pigmentation is due to melasma , then Kocic acid, Ascorbic Acid and vitamin A creams can help. I do believe that a diagnosis is needed prior to treatment. Dr Davin S. Lim. Brisbane.
