Sleeping on side after breast implants with augmentation?

Question

I move around a lot in my sleep and usually sleep on my side. I’m worried that I will end up sleeping on my side without knowing it. What are the risks of sleeping on my side if I accidentally happen to?

The risk of sleeping on your side affecting your breast augmentation results are greatest during the six weeks directly following your operation. During that time, the implant capsule is still forming and is in its most vulnerable state. If you sleep on your side or stomach during this time, it can cause irregularities in the capsule formation and may result in implants that are more motile. After six weeks, the breast implant capsules are about 90% formed, and therefore, side or stomach sleeping has a less drastic impact on breast implants and their respective capsules.

It is important to discuss your sleep position following breast surgery with your operating surgeon as he/she will have their post-operative protocols to follow for your specific case. To minimize your movement during the night and risk of sleeping on your side in the early stages post-surgery, I suggest placing extra pillows on each side of you to minimize your turning or at least, to wake you when you begin to turn. Choose only a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Best wishes.
