I’ve always seen lip flips with Botox for decreasing teeth exposure or a “gummy smile” but what about to show more of the upper teeth? I went to a plastic surgeon consultation for a lip lift because my gum line doesn’t show at all when I smile and I’d like for my top teeth to show more. However, he said it wasn’t significant enough for surgery and he used Botox for a lip flip. Does this sound right? Also, I didn’t notice a huge difference in my smile or teeth but exposure.

Answer: Lip flip Botox for a lip flip is different than a Botox for a gummy smile. A lip flip will allow more of the "pink part" of the lip to show. Botox for a gummy smile is injected differently and relaxes the lips to rest further over the teeth, improving a gummy smile.

The reason for this is that the mucosa of the upper lip generally stays in the lower position, which is how the lip is "flipped" and how there comes to be more show of the vermillion. To reliably augment elevation of the upper lip a lip lift procedure might be better.

Answer: This is a GREAT question: Does lip flip affect the smile and increase dental show? We have performed too few lip-flips to comment on your question with certainty, but I'll give you my 2 cents. We have seen elevation of the pink border of the upper lip with very little Botox (6-10 units). People feel a heaviness of their upper lip for a week or so after the treatment, and satisfaction is high. We have only offered a lip-flip to our patients with previous lip aug. who wanted a bit of upward lift of the cupid's bow. Since the only way of definitively lifting your upper lip is with lip lift surgery, a trial of a conservative lip-flip may be reasonable. If you don't like the effect, it will completely wear off in around 3 months. Hope this helps. Dr Joseph
