Is Latisse safe for blepharitis?

Question

Is Latisse safe for people who have blepharitis? Mine is under control after visiting an opthamologist, who recommended I scrub with a cotton ball soaked in baby shampoo morning and night, and prescribed an antibiotic (I no longer need to use the antibiotic). Thank you!

Hello! 
Thank you for your question.  Blepharitis typically refers any condition that causes inflammation of the eyelid skin.  As such, it has several causes, including skin diseases such as rosacea, or infections with bacteria or Demodex mites.  Without a thorough examination, it is often hard to discern the real cause of the blepharitis.  However, the result is the same: inflammation of the eyelid skin.  Latisse comes from a family of medications called "prostaglandin analogs," which are notorious for causing and exacerbating inflammation.  I usually recommend to my patients to avoid Latisse whenever they have an inflammatory condition such as blepharitis, as it may make symptoms works. I suggest that you consult with an oculoplastic surgeon, who is normally also trained in ophthalmology, for a better assessment before starting Latisse.

Hi, First, you must be sure that your blepharitis has resolved - meaning that there is no more pain or itchiness and that it responded to antibiotics. You can't use the same bottle of Latisse - to avoid re-infecting the eye with contaminated contents.If you are prone to blepharitis, it may be a good idea to use one bottle of Latisse per eye.Thank you, Justin Harper, M.D.
