Can the appearance of my nostrils be reduced? (Photos)

Question

I was wondering if it is possible to have anything done to reduce the appearance of my nostrils , they are also uneven though I don’t think I have any issues with breathing. I wonder if this can be done as well as reducing the overall size of the nose. Thanks.

The close frontal and basal-oblique photos show unequal nostril visibility and alar-rim shape, but the camera angle and proximity exaggerate differences and do not reveal the full profile or airway. Prominent nostrils may result from alar-rim retraction, tip rotation or projection, columellar position, a wide alar base, or asymmetric lower lateral cartilages. These are not corrected by one standard “nostril reduction.” Depending on the examination, treatment may involve tip repositioning and support, alar-rim or composite grafts to lower a retracted rim, limited alar-base reduction, or correction of the caudal septum. Reducing the overall nose can be combined when appropriate, but simply removing tissue may worsen nostril show, create notching, or narrow the airway. Perfect nostril symmetry is rarely achievable because the cartilages, facial skeleton, and healing are naturally asymmetric. Standardized frontal, profile, and true basal views plus an internal examination are needed even when breathing feels normal. A conservative plan should prioritize rim support and balanced nostril shape before deciding how much overall size reduction is safe.

Based on your photos, it may be possible to reduce the appearance of your nostrils and improve symmetry. This can often be addressed through rhinoplasty, which can also refine the overall size and shape of the nose while maintaining proper function.

The short answer is yes, you can certainly reduce the size of the nostrils, however the question is in which direction. There are options to lower the alar rim which decreases nostril show, however there are not good ways to decrease the nostrils in a longitudinal manner. This can often be performed as part of an open rhinoplasty and would likely require some type of grafting (alar rim grafts or composite graft from the ear). Your best option is to discuss with a rhinoplasty surgeon and go over exactly what changes you are looking for and review what your best options are.

Alar rim grafts can be used to decrease the vertical height of the nostrils or you can reduce the lower border of the septum to pull the columella up higher.
