Is it normal to cut Invisalign trays?

My orthodontist cut both of my Invisalign trays and only left the front 6 teeth. My molars aren’t biting all the way and he said this would help. Is this normal?

Yes, I do this as well in my practice to allow the posterior teeth to erupt further together and help the teeth settle into a more comfortable bite.
