Pilar cyst removal. Should I visit family doctor first or a dermatologist/plastic surgeon?

A real surgeon would be a board certified plastic surgeon - that is all he does.The least trained would be a plastic surgeonA dermatologist may or may not have experience in surgery.Not removing the entire cyst will most likely result in recurrence - go with the best, a plastic surgeon

Hello and thank you for your question. If the cyst causes you discomfort you can have it removed and insurance should cover for it. You can consider seeing a surgeon or a dermatologist for the procedure. It will be better if you get a referral from your primary care provider to see a specialist. If you want to pay out of pocket then you can see a surgeon directly without a referral. 

Removal of a pilar cyst should be a routine procedure for most board-certified dermatologists.  We often can removal the lesion leaving a smaller scar.

If you have the option to go directly to the surgeon who will be able to take care of this, that will save you some time.  If, however, you plan on using your insurance for this and will need to see your primary care physician first for a referral then you'll have to do it that way.Better to save a step if that's an option for you!I hope that this helps and good luck,Dr. Alan EnglerMember of RealSelf100
