Should I go on accutane?

Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers.

Isotretinoin is one of the most effective treatments available for moderate to severe cystic acne. For many patients struggling with such severe acne isotretinoin is the only treatment option that offers clearance of their skin where other treatments have failed. The results can be life changing. However, isotretinoin has a number of potential side effects that require close monitoring by a board-certified dermatologist. Female patients who are pregnant or planning on pregnancy while on isotretinoin therapy are not candidate for isotretinoin therapy because isostretinoin is associated with severe birth defects. The decision to start on isotretinoin treatment should be made after you have had full discussion with your dermatologist about the potential side effects and required monitoring while on treatment. 

I think it is a great possible choice. YOU will need to discuss all risks/benefits with your dermatologist. Make sure you see a dermatologist who is comfortable with prescribing accutane.
