Laser hair removal and dark spots on legs - is there a likelihood it could make the spots worse? (Photo)

i have naturally medium fair skin, and waht used to be freckles are now many dark spots on my legs. I have treated them before with IPL, but came back. I have both hyper and hypopigmrntation on my legs. I'm interested in laser hair removal, and I've heard it may help with my dark spots, too. Is that true? Is there a likelihood it could make the spots worse? Any advice regarding what I might do for the many discolorations on my legs? thank you!

There is a risk of hyperpigmentation with laser hair removal. Diode, alexandrite and yag lasers work best for hair removal and safe for darker skin tones. I typically have patients do every 4 weeks for the first 3 times and then every 4-6 weeks for 3 times after. Changes in skin pigment, either hypo or hyperpigmentation are not common permanent problems after laser hair removal. There are multiple treatment options to improve the sun damaged skin of the legs. IPL or alexandrite laser could work.

Hello, thank you for your question and for including a photo.  If you have done IPL before on your legs, you understand that the pigment gets darker and then it "flakes off".  This can be true with the use of a laser for hair reduction.  If the correct wavelength is used (755nm) the laser will also see the pigment in your skin and treat the pigmented lesions.  If the provider chooses to use the (1064nm) wavelength, the laser will avoid the pigment in the skin and look for the pigment in the follicles.  Just remember that the spots will get darker before they "flake off", this can take 3-4 weeks to happen.  So, YES! the laser for hair reduction can also treat the pigmented lesions. Keep in mind that the pigmented lesions on your legs are the cause of sun exposure, if you get the pigment cleared up you will want to wear your sunscreen to prevent the return of the lesions.Good Luck!
