Is it safe to have a breast augmentation with Factor V Parahemophlia?

Question

I have spent 10 years thinking into if i want to get a breast augmentation, and I do! however i have factor V parahemophlia and can only take amnicar or transamic acid (TXA) in a emergency. Is it too risky? Ive had an emergeny apendix surgery where they cut me 3.5in open and there was no problems with bleeding. I actually just found out i had factor V parahemophlia.

it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. You will need to get a clearance from your doctor prior to surgery. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations.

No problem. Your hematologist can support your surgeon if needed. I recommend an in person consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and be measured. After I measure and discuss goals with my patients, we then look at pictures of women (my patients) with similar measurements with different size and style breast implants. They also get to see what they would look like when the breasts have fully dropped and fluffed and in clothes. You get to see actual results and the surgeon's experience and not a virtual idea of what can be achieved. While there is no absolute contraindication to augmentation in the setting of Factor 5 deficiency. One must consider the risks when contemplating elective (i.e. unnecessary) surgery.

Augmentation is not a particularly high risk or bloody procedure but there are always risks. The key is to mitigate the risks. This would involve hematology clearance and potentially FFP transfusions.

As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

Hi Thoughtful,
I have done several cosmetic procedures on patients with Factor V Leiden Mutation.  This does not lead to a higher risk of bleeding, but a higher risk of forming blood clots.  Typically blood clots form with longer duration surgeries, or where people will be down for an extended period of time after surgery, none of which pertain to breast augmentation.  
I would have no problem with doing this surgery, as long as you, the patient, are aware of the additional risks.  I would normally place you on Eliquis the day after surgery.  I would encourage you being up relatively soon after surgery, which I do anyway.  
Talk to your plastic surgeon, and your physician, or hematologist prior to discuss your risks.  Only you can make that final choice.
