Intensepulsed light (IPL) is a laser treatment that targets damage in the upper layersof the epidermis, reducing red and brown tones. IPL evens skin tone, reducesage spots, and improves discoloration caused by acne scarring.Beforetreatment, patients should avoid direct exposure to the sun and use an SPF of30 or more. Skin that has a recent sunburn or tan can not be treated. Itis advised that patients abstain from using active skin care products for 3days before and after an IPL treatment. Active ingredients such as acids (lactic, glycolic and alpha hydroxy acids) Retinols and Vitamin C should be avoided toreduce the risk of skin irritation. Everyone should be protecting their skindaily with an SPF of 30 but it is especially important before and after an IPLtreatment to prevent hyper-pigmentation from sun exposure. Further post treatment instructionsinclude; avoiding direct sun exposure, hot baths, saunas, hot tubs or exposureto excess heat for 3 days following treatment. Some redness and swelling in thetreated area is expected, patients can use cold compresses to help reduce thesesymptoms. Washing the area gently with amild cleanser is advised. A superficial crust or scabbing can occur, do notrub, scratch or remove the scab, cleanse the area gently and pat dry. You mayapply a moisturizer daily as long as it does not contain any active ingredientsas listed above. The IPL is a fantastic treatmentand is extremely effective if instructions are followed accordingly.
The appropriate skin care regime should be recommended by your treating physician since everyone has a diffent skin type. As a rule of thumb my suggestion would be a good quality Vitamin C serum followed by a peptide moisturizer. Do not forget a good quality sun block.Love your skin.
