Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a laser treatment that targets damage in the upper layers of the epidermis, reducing red and brown tones. IPL evens skin tone, reduces age spots, and improves discoloration caused by acne scarring. Before treatment, patients should avoid direct exposure to the sun and use an SPF of 30 or more. Skin that has a recent sunburn or tan can not be treated. It is advised that patients abstain from using active skin care products for 3 days before and after an IPL treatment. Active ingredients such as acids (lactic, glycolic and alpha hydroxy acids) Retinols and Vitamin C should be avoided to reduce the risk of skin irritation. Everyone should be protecting their skin daily with an SPF of 30 but it is especially important before and after an IPL treatment to prevent hyper-pigmentation from sun exposure. Further post treatment instructions include; avoiding direct sun exposure, hot baths, saunas, hot tubs or exposure to excess heat for 3 days following treatment. Some redness and swelling in the treated area is expected, patients can use cold compresses to help reduce these symptoms. Washing the area gently with a mild cleanser is advised. A superficial crust or scabbing can occur, do not rub, scratch or remove the scab, cleanse the area gently and pat dry. You may apply a moisturizer daily as long as it does not contain any active ingredients as listed above. The IPL is a fantastic treatment and is extremely effective if instructions are followed accordingly.
