Piercing while on isotretinoin?

I'm on 30 mg a day of isotretinoin. I have been wanting a tongue piercing for quite some time and have finally come to start making an appointment to get it only to remember I'm on this medicine. I've read it's not good to get piercings while on it but my derm didn't even mention not getting piercings. Now what can actually happen if I get a tongue piercing while taking isotretinoin?

Thank you for your question. A side effect of Accutane is skin sensitivity, and an increase risk in scarring with any type of trauma to the skin. Whether the skin trauma is for medical reasons or cosmetic reasons, such as tattoos, piercings, waxing, chemical peels, laser treatments, etc., there is a higher risk of scarring if any procedure is done to the skin while on Accutane and up to 6 months after stopping Accutane. I highly recommend you consult with your dermatologist regarding the risks of skin piercings while on Accutane treatment. Take care and good luck.
