Plastic surgeons may utilize a post surgical bra for compression (especially if drains are not used), support (to prevent premature drop or droop) or to achieve other cosmetic goals, as well as for patient comfort. (Many times a nonbouncy breast is less painful). Discuss this with your surgical team. If the bra if uncomfortable, let them know so that they may loosen it , remove it or allow you to wear it for less hours during the day. Good luck and take care.
Depending on the breast reconstruction technique I use there will be a period of time where we encourage the use of a post surgical bra. I use it most frequently in patients after implant abased reconstruction of revision of a prior implant based reconstruction that is referred to me for improvement.
Different doctors have different ideas with regards to what patients should and shouldn't wear, should and shouldn't do after surgery. There isn't anyone specific reason or rule that doctors encourage their patients to wear certain bras after surgery. Some think it is helpful to keep the healing tissue elevated to prevent drooping or asymmetry. Others feel that the compression reduces swelling and fluid accumulation. Others still feel the opposite and keep their patients out of bras entirely during the healing process, thinking that compression reduces blood flow and can impede healing. There's no one perfect answer or one perfect recommendation. Talk to your doctor about what he or she specifically is aiming at with the recommendation for a post surgical bra.
