How is Plastic Surgery Facility Fee Calculated?

The quote you have received for two areas of liposuction seems extremely high. The facility fee would suggest that the operation is going to take a number of hours. You might want to get another opinion.

     $7000 total for two areas is high even in Los Angeles or Beverly Hills.  The $2500 fee is high as well but not ridiculously high.  I typically perform liposuction of the abdomen and back for $5000 or so depending upon the individual, which includes anesthesia and the operating room.  Find a plastic surgeon with ELITE credentials who performs hundreds of liposuction procedures each year.  Then look at the plastic surgeon's website before and after photo galleries to get a sense of who can deliver the results.  Kenneth Hughes, MD Los Angeles, CA

To answer your question, several factors go into establishing facility fees when you have an on-site OR. These include the length of the procedure, the disposable and non-disposable equipment required and the standard outpatient surgery fees supported by the community. Based on the procedure you have described, the fees do seem a bit high for the facility. At our facility, the facility fee for liposuction of the abdomen and back, including the garment would be $1,075.

My OR facility fee includes the cost of the facility itself, anesthesia and staff. In general in my office $2500 would probably cover all that for a two area liposuction for most patients.

Usually the operating room is billed by time, and I don't know how long your procedure is scheduled for. In our center, two hours of actual surgery time would be billed at about $2200, same order of magnitude. My hospital would charge $8000 for the same(--needless to say, no aesthetic surgery is done at the hospital).  The quoted facility fee does seem reasonable.
