Dark mole with red halo around it. Should I be worried? (photos)

Question

I have a dark mole on my upper back that I first noticed a few months ago. Since then, it shrunk in size and lightened in color. Now, this week it seems the same mall has gotten larger, darker (almost black), and now has a red halo around it. It is also bleeding a little bit. I called a dermatologist today but the soonest anyone can see me is December 10th. Does this sound like melanoma?

As the diagnosis can not be made based on the photograph provided, I would recommend consulting with a board certified dermatologist.  Given the recent history of spot changing he or she may want to perform a biopsy to determine if the spot is benign or not.  I hope this was helpful.Best,Dr. Wilkes

The picture you submitted is difficult to see. However, your description would suggest this growth should be biopsied or excised as soon as you are able. Your description would prompt us to rule out melanoma, but ultimately a biopsy or excision is necessary to fully provide the answer as to whether it is benign or malignant (cancer) and whether it needs further attention. Always pay attention to changing growths, especially changes in size, color, symmetry, border irregularity, and features such as bleeding and crusting or erosion/ulceration. You are on the correct track of going to your dermatologist.
