Is red light therapy safe?

Question

I have searched everywhere but there doesn't seem to be any reputable sources on the subject, other than sun tanning companies which I don't trust. I am interested in getting this done at a spa but I am worried this treatment may have some consequences e.g. long term skin damage. I have taken extreme care of my skin from the sun since I was a teen, so I don't want to ruin my progress by doing something that may damage it. Are there any negative consequences? Is there UV etc., in this treatment?

Red light therapy is safe, but not very effective.  I suggest going to a cosmetic dermatologist for a formal evaluation of your concerns.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Hi, If used for the correct indication, say, acne, LED is a useful adjunct to treatment. As suggested by the other experts, it would be better to look to a dermatologist than a spa for your skin needs. Good luck!

The question now is what are YOU trying to achieve? Dermatologists use red light for the treatment of acne (often combined with Blue light) as well as PDT- to kill precanceous cells.
