Hi! I have been under treatment for MPB since Aug 2016. My dermatologist prescribed me Finasteride 1mg and Rogaine. I’ve been using both for two years now with good results. However I believe the Finasteride is losing effectiveness. I made an appointment with my dermatologist to discuss switching medications but she was unable to write me script for Dutasteride because it’s not FDA approved and referred me to several hair restoration specialists who may. Do doctors prescribe this for MPB? Thanks
Answer: Dutasteride Great question.Dutasteride theoretically has more potency for hair preservation than Finasteride but a higher side effect profile as well. The use of dutasteride for hair loss is an off-label use according to the FDA. Typically regrowth of both agents occurs in areas where the hair is miniaturized and not where slick baldness occurs. Consider the use of regenerative techniques such as PRP and others and the use of nutraceuticals such as Nutrafol which have a much better side effect profile.Best, Dr. Anil Shah

Answer: Dutasteride for MPHL; Englewood Cliffs New Jersey Dutasteride is routinely used for male pattern hair loss. It is not FDA-approved for this indication. Dutasteride inhibits type 1 & 2 of the alpha reductase enzyme which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Head-to-head studies have shown that to dutasteride is superior to finasteride in suppressing DHT. Both dutasteride and finasteride are effective at decreasing hair loss and stimulating some hair regrowth. We have combined PRP with dutasteride to produce improved results. Find a hair loss expert.

Answer: Dutasteride There have been good studies showing the efficacy of dutasteride in MPB. You should try it and see if you have improvement over the finasteride as the mechanism of action is not exactly the same. Prescribing for this purpose is outside FDA approval but it is very common for physicians to prescribe drugs that are FDA approved for other reasons when clinical evidence exists for alternate indications. See this citation for reference: The importance of dual 5α-reductase inhibition in the treatment of male pattern hair loss: Results of a randomized placebo-controlled study of dutasteride versus finasteride

Answer: Yes we do I often use dutasteride when finasteride has failed. While it has similar side effects, it is sometimes more successful used only several times a week.
