Is peroxide something that should be put on incisions post op?

Hydrogen peroxide can help you remove small clots on suture lines due to its effervescent quality.  However, repeated use of hydrogen peroxide can destroy the ability of wounds to heal properly.  The judicious use of hydrogen peroxide on a Q-tip, once a day, to get blood clots off suture lines is very useful because these blood clots are a breeding ground for bacteria.The hydrogen peroxide can also help remove caked on topical antibiotics, but the key words here are"judicious use".  In my practice, I ask patients not to use the hydrogen peroxide at all, but just soap and water.  With reference to soap, I recommend a significant antiseptic pre-operatively like Dial soap, but post-operatively, something much milder like Dove or a glycerin soap.  Your question about hydrogen peroxide is a great question, but with a very tricky answer.  A little is good, a lot is bad. 

Peroxide is goof to remove dry blood off the sutures. I do not ususally recommend it for this.  The sutures are often easy enough to remove.
