Overcorrection with kenalog on facial scar: how long might atrophy last? (Photo)

Question

Hi, I have a scar on the side of my nose from mohs surgery. It's been treated with monthly kenalog injections for 5 months. The scar looks good but the area around it has atrophied, resulting in a shadow on my face. Pic shows it in its worst light. Would really appreciate advice about how long atrophy might last and if filler is an option. Also if you could please be gentle in your reply I'd be so grateful--been through alot with the skin cancer and also body dysmorphic disorder. Many thanks :)

There are some reports of injecting saline to counteract the effects of kenalog.  Filler could certainly be able option as well.  Discuss with your doctor.

The body is remarkable in its ability to make things right, but the body usually takes its time.  I have seen atrophic areas fill in over time.  It can take a year.  In the mean time, a filler may help.

Time will tell, I think at this stage it is reasonable to wait 4-6 months. I have given atrophy before injecting in the past to areas on the face for scaring conditions like discoid lupus, and have seen remarkable recovery from atrophy 6 mths plus after stopping the steroid injections. Your deficit in the shadows can easily be corrected by HA fillers if needed. All the best, Dr Davin S. Lim
