Is re-excision of severely atypical moles TRULY necessary?

If the mole came back with severe atypia and was reported that the margins show the same, I strongly suggest you remove the entire lesion with a re-excision.   I would gladly have a larger scar than a melanoma.

Thank you for your question. Abnormal moles are still benign lesions, however, a severely atypical mole should be removed because there is a higher risk of the lesion turning malignant, aka melanoma. There are numerous scar treatments available to help the incision site heal with better aesthetic outcomes.
