Why am I still getting new and painful acne after taking accutane?

I’ve been on accutane (40mg) for three months, first month i took one pill every other day, second month one every day, and now at the end of the third month it’s one pill every other day and two on the days I don’t take just one. I take it with food, and I’m still getting new and painful acne on my chin. Nowhere else. I’ve tried everything, changing my pillowcase, washing my sheets every week and still nothing. I’m just frustrated, no acne treatment has ever worked and I was hoping this would.

Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers.

Thank you for your question. Accutane is a weight based therapy and a certain amount needs to taken based on your weight. Unfortunately, acne flares are common when on treatment and can persist for weeks to months into treatment. I highly recommend you consult with your prescribing dermatologist regarding your questions and concerns about your acne and treatment. Take care and good luck.
