Did the doctor remove my splints too soon after septoplasty and turbinate reduction?

Question

Two days post op my doctor removed my splints, now i'm a week and a half post op, and there is cartilage dangling in my nose obstructing my nasal pathway. Did my doctor remove my splints too soon?

You may have had nasal packing removed 48 hours after septoplasty that was functioning as a splint. Septal splints are sutured in place and may be left for longer periods of time. "Dangling cartilage" doesn't sound "normal", so it seems like it may be best for you to visit your surgeon so you can have your questions answered with certainty. Hope this helps. Dr Joseph

It is difficult to answer this question without the benefit of a picture of your nose or being able to see the cartilage hanging out.  If you can actually see cartilage hanging out, then so can your iphone.  Try taking a picture of it and reposting your question.  Alternatively, come in for a consultation.  It looks like you are fairly close to me.

Dear Good559,Thank you for your question. Cartilage obstructing from your nostril 2 days post-op usually not from the splint. The splint is usually placed to prevent blood/fluid from collecting in the middle of your nose. Good luck,Nirmal R. Nathan, M.D.

Not seeing the problem, I would have to guess that it was not the issue of removing splints too soon, but not having adequate coverage to the cartilage or not having the cartilage well secured with sutures.  It is highly important that you have a followup for him to look inside carefully in your nose.
