Can you clarify the % of women, that have had the free nipple graft breast reduction surgery, that loses their nipple sensation?

I am scheduled to have a breast reduction done at the end of May. My doctor told me there are two types of procedures they use, free nipple graft or pedicle method. They need to take a certain number of grams out to get it covered by insurance and my doctor said I would have to do the free nipple graft. The doctor said that I would lose sensation in my nipples with this method. I have read some articles that say there is a chance I would have my sensation back in my nipples.

Hi, And thank you for the question. 
During breast reduction surgery with free nipple grafts, which is typically performed in patients with very low position of the nipple, the nipple areolar complex is removed completely from the underlying breast tissue, and then sutured in the new more uplifted location on the breast. Because the nipple is removed completely, all the nerves and breast ducts are divided, and patients are not able to breast feed or feel the nipple, nipple projection is lost as well. 
However, sometimes, the nerves grow back into the skin surrounding the nipple, so some sensation around the nipple is possible. 
I suggest that you seek an in person consultation with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon specializing in Breast Reduction surgeries to further discuss your options, specific techniques, concerns and expectations. Make sure you specifically look at before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgery performed by your surgeon and evaluate their results.

By definition, the nipple is taken off and sewn back on to the breast like a skin graft. It will not have nipple sensation once healed. It may gain some skin like sensation but even that is unlikely.

I never use a free nipple graft as it is not needed. The technique I recommend is The Bellesoma Method. This will reduce and reshape your breast tissue creating upper pole fullness without implants, elevate them higher on the chest wall and more medial to increase your cleavage. The weight of the breast is transferred to the underlying pectoralis major muscle resulting in pain relief without excessive reduction. Vertical scars are avoided, nipple sensation (in 95%) and the ability to breast feed are maintained. Insurance companies do not cover this technique.
