I am a type 1 diabetic. My last a1c was 8.6. I'm wondering if that's a safe point to get cosmetic surgery? (Liposuction and breast augmentation)
Answer: Diabetic with an 8.6 a1c and surgery? Is it safe? You may qualify for surgery, but you need to discuss with your surgeon as well as your primary physician. An in person consult with an an ASPS board certified surgeon is the only way to determine the best route for your body and your goals. It is all about designing the perfect plan for You.Good luck, please let us know how it goes.-Dr. Constantino Mendieta

Answer: Diabetics under good control can be excellent candidates for liposuction. I don't see a problem going forward with liposuction but this is something you should discuss with your endocrinologist as well as your plastic surgeon.

Answer: Diabetes and elective surgery Thank you for your question regarding your A1C levels and the likelihood of getting cosmetic surgery. While I prefer the A1C to be stable at or below 6 for an extended period of time prior to surgery, other surgeons may have a different protocol for diabetics in place. As surgeons, we always want to ensure the health and safety of a patient both during and after a surgical procedure. My suggestion would be to go for at least 3 consultations with board certified plastic surgeons in your area to find one you are comfortable with and who has your best interest in mind. I would also encourage you to meet with the Physician who is working with you to control your diabetes to get approval prior to following through with cosmetic surgery.
