3 weeks post-breast reduction - noticed small hole at T junction with white/yellow discharge. Should I be concerned? (photo)

The T point in a reduction or lift is vascular watershed located at the confluence of multiple incisions. As a result, vascularity is relatively compromised. Additionally, this is generally an area of elevated tension. These 2 factors combined will often lead to delayed healing.Your situation is not uncommon. It is typically not a cause for significant concern. These wounds in most cases will heal on their own with local care and infrequently require operative intervention. Constitutional symptoms (such as fever, chills, rigors) as well as redness, swelling, or increasing pain or drainage is suggestive of infection and should be red flags.As always, discuss your concerns with your board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

Thank you for your question.There is most likely a suture poking through that needs to be removed. The T-site can sometimes open up, which is normal there is a lot of tension on that area. Typically it is just a superficial opening, but better to have it looked at in person.

Unfortunately this is a common occurrence with breast reduction. It is not alarming. Your surgeon should be aware of this minor issue and advise you how best to manage it

The complication you are experiencing does happen (related to blood flow/tension in the area) and tends to go on to heal without long-term sequelae, except the possible need for scar revision in the future. At your stage of healing, sometimes the area opens further before it continues to close…Sometimes, removal of an exposed suture helps to expedite healing.I would suggest continued close follow-up with your plastic surgeon.  Best wishes. 

This is a very common post op healing issue area. Best to see your chosen surgeon for full explanation and care... 

It is not uncommon for the "T" junction area to break down a bit.  Often local wound care will take care of this issue, but I suggest you review this with your surgeon.

The first thing I would suggest is contact you plastic surgeon, Having said that, if this operation has an area of difficulty this is the area. It can be the area of most tension as the tissues are moved to this area to tighten the skin envelope. I typically have patients wash twice a day, apply bacitracin ointment, use light dressing and no bras that will irritate this spot. This area heals very well. As with all internet comments, you plastic surgeons evaluation and treatment regimes should supersede anything written here.Good LuckStephen M.
