I want to remove keloid scar on my left knee - can it be done? (Photo)

Question

I fell while walking down a crowded street last July and sustained a large scrape on my right knee. My injury did not heal well and turned into a keloid scar. I want to have this scar surgically removed because it is itchy and uncomfortable. Can you please advise if it can get taken out?

Intralesional injections of anti-inflammatory agents is the treatment of first choice for keloid scars in order to flatten them, lighten them in color and to treat itch and tenderness. Surgical removal, especially in an area subject to a great deal of movement (such as the knee) poses a high risk for recurrence and perhaps even a bigger scar. I have been successfully treating keloids for several decades and jumping into surgery, while it may seem like the logical first approach, typically is not. Make sure that you consult with an experienced, board certified cosmetic dermatologist scar specialist. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Unlike non-inflamed scars, keloids have the potential for growth beyond the original footprint of injury.
