There is no consensus on whether or not it is safe to get the Orbera balloon after a successful Nissen fundoplication. Some doctors believe that the Orbera balloon can interfere with the Nissen fundoplication and cause complications. Others believe that the Orbera balloon is safe to use after a successful Nissen fundoplication. If you are considering getting the Orbera balloon after a successful Nissen fundoplication, it is important to talk to your doctor. They will be able to assess your individual circumstances and determine if the Orbera balloon is right for you.
Hello, hope this finds you weel. But any type of gastric surgery susch a Nissel fundoplication is an immediate contradiction for gettig any type of gastric ballon. it is importan to respect these safety essures as it can lead to serious adverse events from the balloon, including gastric perforation, balloon migration, and mortalityHave a blessed day.
Unfortunately any previous gastric surgery is a complete contraindication for all of the gastric balloons on the market including Orbera, Reshape, and Obalon. You should look into a comprehensive weight loss program or surgery if you qualify. I wish you the best of luck.
There are some contraindications for placement of the Orbera Balloon such as any bariatric surgeries. Fundoplication is another surgical procedure which is contraindicated for Orbera Program.
Hi, Unfortunately, this is an absolute. You are at a higher risk of complications if you've had prior stomach surgery, including Nissen fundoplication, which makes this an absolute contraindication to Orbera placement. Other stomach surgeries, such as prior LabBand, gastric bypass, or gastric sleeve, would also be contraindications. Several Orbera case reports outside of the United States indicated that stomach rupture may occur in individuals with a history of stomach surgery. Though extraordinarily rare, this is obviously a serious complication and not worth the potential risk. Stomach rupture has not been reported in individuals without a history of stomach surgery. We think that prior surgery creates scar tissue, which alters the ability of the stomach to accommodate properly to the balloon, leading to potential complications.
Placement of the Orbera intragastric balloon is contraindicated after any stomach operation. In the original study there were 5 gastric ruptures/perforations and 4 of these were in patients with prior gastric surgery. If your Nissen fundoplication was done laparoscopically with minimal dissection and only plication sutures, you may be able to find a bariatric surgeon with experience in taking the original operation apart and then implanting a balloon. There are bariatric surgeons who have successfully taken down the Nissen wrap laparoscopically and then done a gastric bypass. You may want to contact Dr. George Fielding in New York about whether or not he would think about putting in a lap band for you. He is extremely experienced and technically proficient. Good luck!
