I'm a black woman and I was wondering how safe it is to apply retinoid acid so the dermapen can slide better and hyaluronic acid after the treatment to stretch marks and face on dark skin or is it better to just stick with vitamin c serum?
Answer: Retinol with Dermapen: Happy to help. We suggest consulting with a board certified physician on using a Dermapen as it can be done incorrectly and may be damaging to your skin. We recommend using products that are proven safe to use post procedure and do not recommend using retinoic acid with a Dermapen. This can be very irritating and abrasive to your skin. Sometimes, skincare professionals will combine microneedling with topical formulas such as SkinCeuticals HydratingB5 to use as a glide to help with results. We would like to recommend SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic. This product has been safe to be used post-procedure. C E Ferulic is proven to protect skin against free radicals and helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Apply 3-5 drops to face, neck, and chest. Follow with SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifier. This multi-functional serum is proven to: 1. Amplify the skin’s hyaluronic acid levels by 30%, 2. Improve the appearance of firmness and facial plumpness, 3. Help prevent the breakdown of hyaluronic acid, and 4. Visibly smoothes skin texture. This product has been tested suitable for use post procedure and will improve the appearance of firmness and facial plumpness. Finally, we recommend protecting your skin with a broad spectrum sunscreen, like SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF50 to face, neck, and chest. In the evening, we would recommend applying retinol. Retinol is a form of vitamin A (retinoic acid) that is clinically proven to help improve the appearance of aging skin. Retinol has been shown to help improve uneven skin tone, minimize acne, promote cell turnover, and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.3 is great for first time users. To help with dryness and peeling that may occur, follow with SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2. This moisturizer is formulated to address age-related lipid loss and provides improvement in skin smoothness, pore size, fullness, and overall radiance.

Answer: Vitamin C, HA or PRP Depending on the vehicle of the active ingredient VIt C, EGF, HA and PRP are all safe. Vitamin A tends to be more irritating. I usually tell my patients to place vitamin A 3-5 days after - when skin is completely healed up. This gives less chance of irritation. Dr Davin S. Lim
