Does spironolactone work for excessive hair shedding?

Question

My (29/female) hair loss has always revolved around excessive shedding. I shed excessively for 4 years, but after PRP treatments, herbal therapy, and beginning Rogaine use, my shedding stopped for 1.5 years and my hair fully grew back. It started shedding again 1 year ago. A doctor recently prescribed me spiro, but I am concerned about taking it because I already have low testosterone (0.6 free T and 22 serum T). The doctor told me that I do have some miniaturized hairs. Could spiro work for me?

This needs an in-person evaluation. I suggest seeing a hair loss expert now to go over your condition and provide you information about your best treatment options. There are great non-invasive options like prp/progesterone which can help with hair regrowth and/or hair transplantation. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Spironolactone  works well for androgen dependent hair loss.  It can help restore the normal hormone interactions. When one has excess androgen, DHT leads to early miniaturization. Pregnancy is contraindicated in people on spironolactone. Find a hair loss expert. Ask to see photos.PRP hair MD.com

The reality is it depends on the reason for your shedding. If it is AGA related spironolactone could help.  If it’s not AGA related, spironolactone will not help. You have not stated if you still do PRP, minoxidil and the other treatments- but if you do have AGA please remember those treatments are life long. Please see a hair loss expert if concerns persist.
