Is it possible to treat my red marks from tweezing? (Photo)

Question

Tweezing for 8 years has caused thick dark marks. I have been reading about possible laser treatments and chemical peel treatments and different types of skincare products and am curious to know what results to expect from this stuff. I also read that laser treatment may cause the pigmentation to worsen, and was wondering if it was possible to test it on a less visible area of my face to test how my skin would react. I apologize for the low quality pictures.

Unfortunately, as you noted, the photos lack resolution. As a result, I can only make some general remarks. What you are describing is likely a combination of post inflammatory erythema (redness) and and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (blotchy brown spots).  A series of relatively inexpensive, in-office superficial peels (usually two to six treatment sessions, depending upon the agent chosen) have been used successfully for decades for treating these kinds of problems. Typical peeling solutions include high concentration glycolic or salicylic acid, Jessner's Solution, or low concentrations of TCA (trichloroacetic acid).  These days, topical tranexamic acid may be added to the regimen to enhance fading of both red and brown spots. Other agents may also be added as required. Relatively expensive bells and whistles lasers and other light-based devices do pose the risk that you mentioned of themselves causing postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in skin of color. You would be wise to seek consultation and treatment from a board certified aesthetic physician. Best of luck.

There are a number of ways to treat the marks from tweezing.  First I would recommend electrolysis or laser hair in the future to avoid these marks.  Red marks can be treated with the B-Beam laser and it is highly effective.  Pigmented areas can be treated with bleaching creams and chemical peels.  Please consult an expert in skin care and lasers for the best cosmetic results.  Best, Dr. Green
