Can I Use Neosporin Instead of Lotion on my Face?

Question

This is my third week on accutane (absorica) and my face burns and gets really red and irratated after applying lotion. I feel like thisis hurting my skin rather than helping. Should i or can i use neosporin or vasiline instead?

Absolutely do not use Neosporin. That is a topical antibiotic not a lotion. For extremely dry skin you can use Aquaphor or anything gentle in a tube or jar. These are thicker creams than general lotions that come in a pump bottle. Avoid ones with perfumes and fragrances as these will be very irritating.

There are a number of good products out there which can be used to counteract the drying affects of Accutane. Cerave PM moisturizer would be one. This has Niacinamide which will be soothing and help decrease irritation and redness. Eucerin Calming cream, Aveeno Positively Radiant, and Purpose Redness Relief all come to mind as excellent products. 

	Neosporin is a bad choice for two reasons: 1) You do not have a skin infection and 2) Neosporin is notorious for containing Neomycin. Neomycin has been elected Allergen of the Year ( 2010) . This is a dubious honor accorded by American Contact Dermatitis Society "to draw attention to allergens that are very common, under-recognized, merit more attention because they are causing significant allergic contact dermatitis. 

	Incidentally, this year's winner was announced a few weeks ago...and the winner was....envelope please...Methylisothiazolinone, a perservative used in personal care products.
