I Had my Teeth Whitened...what Can I Eat?

Question

I had my teeth whitened today and understand to wait 36-48 hours to eat or drink food or substances that can absorb into the exposed enamel and thus stain the teeth all over again. However, the place I was treated I was told to wait 24 hrs. Which time frame do I follow? Also, I am going to the cinema tonight..can I eat popcorn or stay away from all of it? So in 24-48 hours I can eat/drink dark/colored food and drinks tomato sauce, chocolate

To be on the safe side, I instruct patients to avoid any food or drink that contains any coloring for 48 hours. I would use a straw for all liquids during this time to help avoid direct contact with the teeth. Eating popcorn tonight should be fine. Good luck.

It is best to avoid any food with colors for the first 24-36 hours as the enamel is more porous after whitening and the teeth can absorb the color of the food. Popcorn should be fine but stay away from the seasoning if it's ketchup or BBQ flavour.

I recommend to my patients not eat or drink anything colored ( tomato sauce, tea, coffee, ...) for 48 hours. Having pop corn should not be a problem.

I would wait at least 24 hours before eating anything with color.   My general rule is that anything that you would not want to spill on a white carpet avoid in your mouth. Tomato sauce, grape juice, red wine, etc. 

	After that you should be fine.
