When a root canal is redone, what are the chances of reusing a crown that was pulled out, if it is in good condition?

I had to redo a root canal after a year because of slight pain. The dentist removed the crown and the crown was in good condition. What are the chances that i would have to make a new crown after doing the root canal instead of using the old crown. Is it true that the dimensions of the tooth can change and the existing cap doesn't fit anymore?
