Why am I having throbbing pain years after root canal/new crown in place?

Hello Emily,Crowns are recommended to be placed immediately (a couple weeks) after the root canal is performed.  The fact that you went two years before getting the crown, means that your tooth did not have the best protection against fracture or additional cavities.  For this reason, you may have decay in the tooth, you may need a retreat of the root canal, or you may have a vertical fracture in your tooth.  The be advice I have for you is to go to an endodontist to have the tooth evaluated.  Good luck and I hope this helps. Hi, probably you will need to remove the crown to evaluate this tooth and see if have any fracture, if it not, need to evaluate this side teeth to be sure there's OK.

Antibiotics can take a few (2-4 days) sometimes before noticing an improvement in the discomfort.  I would see the specialist your dentist referred you too asap.   If you are unable to get into the specialist soon and the discomfort does not improve some after 5-7 days you should definitely tell your dentist as the antibiotic he prescribed may not be effective for this infection and a different one might be a better match.

I suggest you go see an endodontist to evaluate the root canalif the new crown is fitted well it should not be giving you any discomfort , it is possible the root canal is getting reinfected
