Can a very dark brown birthmark in leg be removed?

I am African American and I was born with a birthmark above my right knee. It is about the size of a lime. It is the same texture as my normal colored skin. I would consider it cafe au lait? It is just very dark. I've always wanted to get it removed, but I didn't think there could be anything done for a birthmark as dark as mine. Can laser treatment help? What are my options?

Just like a tattoo, some birthmarks can be treated with either nanosecond or the newer picosecond lasers.  Multiple sessions will be required but treatments should help fade some pigmentation so that lesions are less noticeable.  Consult with a board-certified and experienced cosmetic dermatologist.
