I had a rhinoplasty this morning and i blew out my blood clot 8 hours after surgery. I dont have any bleeding left and i did it without too much force. I assumed that the clot was required to stop the bleeding, but since my bleeding became minimal, I thought it wasnt a big deal. I hope i didnt ruin my rhinoplasty. I go see my doctor in seven days. Should i be alarmed?

Answer: Should be fine Some blood cots naturally form at the incision sites inside your nose after a rhinoplasty. As you have said, it did not require much to have the clot come out. Saline nasal spray may be helpful to clean out the inside of your nose but in general time and patience is the key. Touch base with your plastic surgeon at your follow up and have him/her take a look inside your nose or evaluate your nose to make sure all is well. All the best,Dr. Remus Repta

Answer: Blood clot in nose after rhinoplasty It is not unusual to have some form of a blood clot in your nose after a rhinoplasty. Depending on the size of the blood clot, it will usually sit in the nose until it is cleaned out by your surgeon. Other times, if it is large enough it will come out of the nose, though this is less typical. I usually tell my patients to not blow their nose after surgery so as not to incite any bleeding or cause any manipulation of the surgical site. That being said, if you are no longer bleeding and there wasn't much force involved then it is unlikely that you caused any harm to the nose itself. If there are any additional concerns I would urge you to go to your surgeon earlier than seven days to get evaluated.
