During the preliminary studies of CoolSculpting, no one under the age of 18 years was enrolled. It is a very safe procedure and can potentially be used in patients under 18 years, if their body has ceased growing. For girls, that tends to be about 15 or 16, for boys about 16 to 17. However, in your late teens and early 20’s, the body tends to change a bit. Girls tend to get the “freshman 15” extra pounds in college, while boys may see weight gain as they tend to participate in fewer team sports after high school. If you are experiencing lots of weight fluctuations, I think it’s best to wait until your weight is fairly stable for a year or two, no matter what your age. You don’t have to be at your skinniest weight to have CoolSculpting, but it should not be seen as a weight loss procedure. It is to get rid of fatty bulges that are not too big, but are out of proportion with the rest of the body. If you are in your teens, but have a genetic bulge that is truly out of proportion, CoolSculpting may be of benefit to you. CoolSculpting works by lowering the temperature of fat to the point of freezing so that the cells will begin to destruct. The surrounding and tissues and skin are not affected at all. If you are under the age of 18 years, you would need parental permission to have CoolSculpting or any other dermatologic procedure. Please find a board-certified dermatologist to be evaluated for CoolSculpting.
