I had my rhinoplasty 2 days ago. Excessive mucus/phlegm, can I take Mucinex?

I had my procedure 2 days ago. I feel pretty well considering I just had surgery. However, the excessive mucus/phlegm in my throat is becoming unbearable. I can’t swallow without dry heaving or almost choking on it. I’ve been rinsing my mouth almost every minute, is there anything I can do/take to help alleviate this? Would mucinex help dry it up?

Mucinex contains guaifenesin which is an expectorant that can help thin mucus for easier clearance of the mucus such as when you cough or swallow (it decreases the stickiness and viscosity of phlegm). Alternatively, you may also take an allergy tablet/pill, such as loratadine (Claritin) to help reduce secretions and some nasal symptoms. Benadryl (or diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine as well but it can cause drowsiness.
